When the Tools Meant to Include You… Lock You Out

Part of the Voices of the Silenced Series

> I’m someone who uses technology every day to bridge communication gaps. But what happens when the very tools designed to democratize expression… decide I don’t belong?

Platforms like Facebook and Canva let me show up. Tell stories. Build community. But try asking an AI platform to generate an image of someone like me—someone who uses an AAC device to speak—and the system goes quiet. Blocked. Denied. Not because I’ve done anything wrong. But because the filters built to “protect” people have ended up erasing us instead.

I’m not trying to shock or shame. I’m trying to reflect—and represent—the real, everyday lived experiences of disabled people. When algorithmic systems silence disability representation out of fear or over-correction, it becomes something more than a glitch: it becomes digital redlining.

Here’s what I want:

  • I want to show the dignity and joy of an AAC user’s voice.
  • I want a therapist’s kindness to be visible, a caregiver’s patience celebrated, a wheelchair user’s story told in full color.
  • I want AI to help me amplify our movement, not accidentally mute it.

Rise, Relay, Move isn’t just a community—it’s a space for people like me to see ourselves. Not symbolically. Literally.

And if the systems aren’t ready for that yet? Then it’s time to raise our voices until they are.

What are your thoughts? Have you or someone you know ever been excluded, either on purpose or as a result of some obscure rule or policy that was meant to protect you?
